Captains Drive In - 2008
Norman & Chris BrownDurham City GC history was made on New Years Day 2008, when Chris Brown drove in as Club Captain. His father, Norman, held the position in 1997 and as incoming captain Chris became the first past captain’s son to follow in their father’s footsteps in the 121-year history of the club. It was a proud moment for both men who have been members of Durham City since it moved to Littleburn late in 1974.
This year will be an important one for both Durham City and the Brown family. Chris will have the responsibility of seeing the club host its first national event, the English Close Girls Championship in July. Not to be left out, Norman this month (January) will accept a position as Vice President of the Durham County Golf Union in recognition of his loyal service to the county and its golfers.
Despite the rain, a crowd gathered on the first tee to see the ceremonial ball struck for the 20th time. Chris followed this by paying tribute to outgoing captain Gerry Jones, who enjoyed a fine year. With a sense of history befitting the occasion Chris then went on (and on) to acknowledge the many previous incumbents of the captaincy and everyone who has made and makes Durham City such a great place to play golf.
With tickets to the Drive-In sold in aid of the Captain’s Charity for a second year and a raffle on the day, around £400 was raised for this years’ beneficiaries. As well as supporting local charities, with 2008 being an Olympic year Chris has nominated the British Paralympic Association to benefit from our donations.
