Solid Foundations
The Junior Team 2007Durham City has been active in the local community taking golf to schools throughout the area for a number of years. In addition to this, leading by example, Junior Liaison Officer, Darren Richardson and his assistant Steve Park hold classes every Saturday morning throughout the summer to encourage youngsters between the ages of 6 – 10 to enjoy the sport.
This involvement with and the development of youngsters within and outside the club reaped its rewards this year. The junior team, pictured receiving their trophy from the Mayor of Durham, Bob Wynn, won the Durham County Junior 5 Man Team Trophy. They were also runners up in the DCJGS North West Durham League and have several players at various age ranges receiving coaching at county level.
To add to this success two players who have both come through the junior ranks at the club, Richard Mason and Danielle Roseberry, won the Durham County Mixed Foursomes title. Also, in her first full season playing golf, Danielle Brady, after reducing her handicap to 17, has recently been awarded the Durham County Ladies’ Junior Player of the Year 2007 title.
With a thriving junior section and members throughout the club committed to aiding the continued progress of these young people this could only be the start of even greater things to come.
