Time After Time

Mary VineMary VineWhether you are standing on the first tee or striding purposefully towards the last green, spare a glance towards the clubhouse and you will notice that a new clock, kindly donated by Honorary Member, Mrs. Mary Vine, adds a fine finishing touch to the building. All those who know Mary will also know that this gesture is merely the tip of the iceberg & that what follows is only a modest overview of the contribution Mary has made to the game of golf and Durham City Golf Club.

Having also been a keen tennis player, Mary joined Durham City Golf Club with her late husband Fred in 1954. Mary first became Lady Captain in 1961 and as the club celebrated its centenary year in 1987 there could only be one candidate for the position and Mary took office for a second time. As a player, to mention but a few of her achievements, Mary won the club championship on seven occasions along with many other club events. She also achieved success in winning the County Mixed Foursomes title with Martin Sexton in 1978, a feat that wasn’t repeated by Durham City players until 2007.

Over the years Mary has made a great contribution to golf around County Durham and across the region. Having served as both County Captain and President, as Captain, President and secretary of the County Ladies Captains society and as both Captain and secretary of the Durham County Veteran Ladies Golf Association. Mary has also been Honorary Secretary of the club’s Ladies section since the days when DCGC was still at Mount Oswald. With much of Mary’s work over the years being focused on junior development, in 2006 the Golf Foundation offered national recognition in awarding Mary the Sir Henry Cotton Award for her meritorious contribution to junior golf.

If ever a definition of ‘Been there, done that’ was required, the wording would simply say – see Mary Vine. Mary we graciously thank you for the guidance you offer and the tireless work you have done and continue to do for Durham City Golf Club.
