County Mixed Foursomes at Whickham - Great effort by Louise and Andy
The County Mixed Foursomes were held at Whickham Golf Club this year coinciding with their Centenary Year. The matches were held over 3 weekends with 49 teams taking part.
Durham City were represented by 2 teams, Graeme Marchbank, the County stalwart and Club Champion & the up and coming Rebecca Woolley our other team conprising of Andy Bell, a past Club Champion and Louise Richardson a regular for the County Ladies team and Ladies Champion.
Graeme and Rebecca gave a good account of themselves albiet losing to the eventual winners South Moor A at the first extra hole in the second round. Meanwhile Andy and Louise got off to an excellent start winning their second round match against Seaton Carew 6 & 4.
The 3rd round against Ryton A proved to be a much tougher ordeal with Andy and Louise being taken to the 20th hole before winning with a great birdie to take them into the quarter finals where they met South Moor B. Both teams played excellent golf with Durham winning 1up to progress into the semi finals.
The semi final was played against Brancepeth Castle our close neighbours and after another tight absorbing match Andy and Louise won on the last to move into the final.
Their opponents in the final were South Moor A who had narrowly defeated Graeme and Rebecca in the 2nd round.
The golf which was played in the final was of the highest quality with Andy and Louise getting off to a flier with 2 birdies in the first 4 holes to go 3 up. Unfortunately the pendulum swung against them and Louise was a little unlucky when she had to call a penalty on herself when the ball moved. The penalty was loss of hole and this spurred South Moor on having 3 birdies over the next 5 holes to go 1 up.
Both sides played solid golf for the remainder of the match but South Moor gave nothing away and ran out eventual winners by 3 & 2.
Congratulation to South Moor on winning a great event but well done our teams especially Andy and Louise who were so close. It was a memorable weekend and the club are proud of your achievement hopefully next year we will go 1 step further bringing the Championship back to Durham.
