Old Boys Club
As another season draws to a close three former Club Champions showed that experience counts for a lot in this game. Gerry Jones, Stuart Neil & Steve Vickers earned their place in the history books as the Durham County Centenary Year honours were being handed out.
Leading the way was the Club’s immediate past Captain, Gerry Jones, who won the County Seniors Championship at the first time of asking. Having just reached qualifying age Gerry led the field at South Moor to add his name to the list of other well-known local golfing legends to win this title.
Closer to home, Steve Vickers won the County 2nd Division Championship at Durham City. Amongst a host of home players, Steve showed that class is permanent winning the title by a couple of strokes. Believe it or not this is the fourth decade Steve will have his name on the honours boards at DCGC
Finally, as DCGC hosted the County Centenary competition, Stuart Neil partnered by John Ellison of Houghton-le-Spring won the former County players competition at a canter with 47points. Amongst the field of high class golfers gathered, former Journal Champion of Champions, Stuart, rolled back the years to add to the list of honours he has amassed over the years.
Such outstanding performances by golfers with over a hundred years of golfing experience between them just goes to prove the old maxim – a good old ‘un always beats a good young ‘un!
